The City of Tshwane is set to auction off approximately 800 ageing municipal vehicles on February 28, 2026, aiming to reduce maintenance costs and generate revenue. The vehicles, largely high-mileage units exceeding their economic life cycle, are either non-operational or require frequent costly repairs, making them unsuitable for service delivery.

The auction will be held online, with the final value determined by the auctioneer based on condition and market demand. Revenue generated will be managed according to the city’s approved municipal framework and allocated to support broader service delivery priorities.

However, opposition parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) are skeptical about the auction’s financial viability. The City has strengthened its fleet governance framework, including lifecycle-based replacement planning and enhanced maintenance programs, to prevent similar challenges in the future
