MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

Bafokeng, North West – The Bafokeng Regional Court in the North West has sentenced 47-year-old Mncedisi Mvubi to 15 years of direct imprisonment for attempted robbery. The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm. The sentencing stems from an incident that occurred at midnight on 06 April 2024, when Mvubi and his accomplices staged a brazen attack at the Lethabong Police Station. Pretending to be members of the public reporting a criminal matter, the group gained access after officers remotely opened the station’s gate.

Inside the station, Mvubi requested to use the restroom behind the Community Service Centre (CSC). Once permitted, he brandished what was later identified as an air gun and pointed it at an officer, demanding the officer’s service firearm. Displaying remarkable bravery, the officer resisted and subdued Mvubi by gripping him firmly, as described in court, “like a vice grip spanner holds a bolt and nut.”

During the altercation, Mvubi’s two accomplices, a man and a woman, attempted to intervene but failed and eventually fled. Mvubi was arrested on the scene and has remained in custody since the incident. During sentencing, the prosecution presented a Victim Impact Statement, highlighting the traumatic effects of the ordeal on the officers involved. The State urged the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years to underscore the importance of protecting the community and state security.

Regional Magistrate Shibu Mamabolo emphasised the critical role of the courts in safeguarding communities from violent crimes and delivering the maximum sentence allowed by law. Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, welcomed the sentence, praising the prosecutor’s efforts and commending the courage of the police officials involved. Dr. Makhari reiterated the NPA’s commitment to pursuing justice for victims of crime and ensuring community safety.
