ELDERLY WOMAN ROBBED IN MOKOPANE, POLICE WARN OF POLICE IMPERSONATION SCAM
POLOKWANE: Police in Mokopane are investigating a case of common robbery following an incident in which a 68-year-old woman was robbed of cash and bank funds on Tuesday, 28 April 2026 at approximately 10:00.
It is alleged that the victim was approached at the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Retief Streets in Mokopane town by unknown suspects who pretended to be police officials. During the interaction, the suspects reportedly smeared an unknown substance on the victim, after which she became disoriented. She was then taken in a vehicle under false pretenses and forced to hand over cash, her bank card, and PIN.
The suspects later dropped her off a short distance from her residence. Unauthorized transactions were subsequently made using her bank card. The total amount stolen is estimated at R8 300.
The suspects are still unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the incident and warned members of the public against criminals who impersonate police officials.
“Criminals are increasingly using deceptive tactics, including impersonating police officers and the use of unknown substances to disorient victims. Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and to never hand over money, bank cards, or disclose PINs to anyone. Legitimate police officials will never request such items. Always verify the identity of any person claiming to be a police officer and avoid getting into vehicles with unknown individuals,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is urged to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Jack Moselakgomo on 060 726 8764, or Crime Stop08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the MySAPS app.
