TRAGIC DISCOVERY OF MISSING CHILD IN MAKONDE VILLAGE, THOHOYANDOU
POLOKWANE – Police in Thohoyandou have confirmed the tragic discovery of the body of a five-year-old child who was reported missing at Makonde village (Shadani).
The child, identified as Nndwaasiyashu Tambani (5), was reported missing on Saturday, 02 May 2026 at around 13:00. It is alleged that the mother of the child was at home when the child, who had been asleep in another room, went missing.
A search operation was immediately launched involving members of the South African Police Service in Thohoyandou, Emergency Medical Services Search and Rescue teams, and SAPS Water Wing, as well as community members.
During the search, the child was tragically found floating in the Mutale River. The body was recovered and handed over to the police.
The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a young life. We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the child during this difficult time. As we honor the child protection week I would like to urge parents and guardians to never loose sight of the little ones.” Concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
