POLICE INVESTIGATE CASES OF ATTEMPTED MURDER FOLLOWING SHOOTING INCIDENT DURING POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS IN SESHEGO
POLOKWANE Police in Limpopo are currently investigating cases of attempted murder after a violent incident occurred during political party campaigns at Juju Valley in Seshego policing area on Sunday, 19 May 2024 at about 14:00. The incident resulted in two individuals, including a minor, sustaining gunshot wounds.
The violence erupted during a campaign event between rival political parties, leading to an escalation that endangered the live of an innocent 09-year-old bystander. The police and emergency medical medical services responded swiftly to the scene, providing immediate assistance to the minor girl and commencing a thorough investigation into the matter. Another case was later reported after it was established that a 25-year-old man was shot during the scuffle.
According to the information available at this stage, several other people sustained injuries after the members hit each other with stones and several shots were fired. There is a possibility of more cases being reported as investigations unfold.
The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned the violent acts, emphasizing that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The Provincial Commissioner reiterated the commitment of the SAPS to ensuring that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
“We deplore this senseless act of violence that has resulted in injuries to innocent individuals, including a child. The safety and security of our communities, especially during the election period, is of utmost importance. The SAPS will intensify its efforts to maintain law and order and ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act face the full might of the law,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
“As we approach the general elections, we urge the members of the public to be aware of criminality disguised as political activism, which seeks to hijack public grievance to advance instability,” added Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
