Diepsloot leaders released on bail

Three members of the Diepsloot community, Pheelo Jack Hlongwane (34),Loyiso Toyiya (37)and Lefa Nkala (44) were released on R500 bail by the Randburg Magistrates ’Court, following an unopposed bail hearing.
They were arrested on Thursday, 29 July 2023 following community protests in Diepsloot where residence were demanding audience with the President of South Africa about high levels of crime in Diepsloot, the influx of undocumented foreign nationals in the area and lack of police visibility. They are facing charges of intimidation, public violence, incitement to commit public violence, malicious injury to property and damage of essential infrastructure.

The accused presented evidence in affidavit format that detailed their personal circumstances and why they think that the interest of justice permits their release on bail.
Regional Court Prosecutor, Tebogo Sello led the oral evidence of the investigating officer, Sergeant Khanisani Mathibela who stated that the allegations faced by the accused are of a serious nature and that he is in possession of statements that alleges that the accused intimidated shop owners from the ChumaMall in Diepsloot to join their action or face looting. Furthermore, the accused were alleged to have destroyed the street vendors/hawkers stands in an attempt to force them to join the community march and burnt tyres to blockade roads in Diepsloot.

The case has been postponed to 17 August 2023 for further investigations.
