Modimolle-Mookgophong mayor Marlene van Staden has died.

The Democratic Alliance mayor in the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, Marlene van Staden has passed away.

The DA has confirmed that its only mayor in the Limpopo province has died today.

Van Staden died today at the age of 42.

Party leader John Steenhuisen says they are mourning the tragic loss of van Staden after a long battle with illness.

“Aside from being the DA’s only mayor in the province of Limpopo, Marlene was a trailblazing politician and pioneering public servant who overcame tremendous obstacles in the Modimolle-Mookgophong municipality to bring better government to all who live there,” says Steenhuisen.

In many ways, she created the blueprint for the DA’s whole-of-society approach to governance which has the potential to change the face of South African government in its entirely,” he continues.

Steenheisen says van Staden is known to have good relationships with civil society organisations to better capacitate and improve governance.

Van Staden served as the mayor of Modimolle-Mookgophong since 2016.

Marlene is survived by her husband and two young sons.
