BAIL APPLICATION FOR THE GQEBERHA MASS SHOOTING POSTPONED FOR LEGAL REPRESENTATION
Mzwandile Mahambehlala (33), charged with the mass shooting, which resulted in the death of eight people and injury of three others, in KwaZakhele in Gqeberha, made a brief appearance in the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court today. The court postponed his formal bail application to 20 March 2023, for him to secure his “Legal Wise” attorney.
During his brief appearance, the magistrate ordered that no pictures of the accused person may be taken. Mahambehlala was arrested on 03 March 2023, in a house in Walmer Township in Gqeberha, following detective work of the South African Police Service(SAPS). According to police reports, two armed men entered a yard in Makanda Street in KwaZakele on the 29th of January 2023, and shot at the guests attending a birthday celebration.
Eleven people were shot during the attack, seven people were certified dead on the scene, one succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, and three sustained serious injuries. The police have indicated that they are still searching for more persons involved in the shooting, and once captured, they will be added to Mahambehlala on the dock.
The NPA is apposing bail on this matter.
