LIMPOPO HEALTH DEPARTMENT MOURNS THE DEATH OF PROFFESOR ZHOU SALATHIEL MZEZEWA
Limpopo Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has on behalf of the department expressed sadness at the passing of Professor Zhou Salathiel Mzezewa, a hardworking retired clinician and an academic in the medical field who was attached to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital even post his retirement.
Prof Mzezewa a trained as a Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon who also holds a PhD. from Uppsala, Sweden, was one of those the province pride itself. With his vast knowledge and experience gained through his studies, he returned to Afrika and chose to settle in our province in the public sector and offer his expertise in the management of burn victims and children born with cleft palate. This was at the time when Plastic Surgeons were, as they still are, in demand, with most of them opting for the most lucrative cosmetic practice in the private sector. Upon joining Mankweng Tertiary Complex in 2005, he established the Mankweng Burns Unit, which remains the only burns unit in the province.
“We are deeply saddened that as a province, we have lost such a seasoned, hardworking clinician. Through his knowledge and expertise, he mentored a lot of young aspiring surgeons and introduced them to the field of plastic surgery. He contributed to the initial training of at least six young surgeons who went on to train and graduate as Plastic Surgeons. He also collaborated in research with a lot of colleagues in our hospital, with these collaborations leading to publications on peer reviewed medical journals. The gains to our province from Prof Mzezewa’s efforts will forever be evident in our hospital. May the memories of his contribution to the profession console us as we continue to carry on where he left. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” said MEC Ramathuba.
