The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month with the objective of not only educating the public about mental health but also to reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often subjected to. In South Africa, there is a stigma attached to mental illness. People living with mental illness are perceived as crazy, under spiritual curse, weak, or simply misunderstood.

“This month provides us a timely reminder that the mental health is essential and that those living with mental health issues deserves care, understanding, compassion, and pathways to hope, healing, recovery, and fulfillment. Let’s continue to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing our personal experiences. Avoid suffering in silence as that will lead you in not getting help and treatment. We must be aware of the consequences of mental illness and must always give utmost importance to keeping the mind healthy like the way the physical body is kept healthy”, said MEC.
