G20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, have adopted a declaration despite the United States’ absence

G20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, have adopted a declaration despite the United States’ absence, marking a significant diplomatic win for host country South Africa. The declaration, agreed upon by consensus, focuses on addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and debt sustainability.

The adoption of the declaration was announced by South African International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola, who emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation. The move is seen as a rebuke to US attempts to block the declaration, with Lamola stating that the G20 “cannot be paralysed” by the absence of one member.

The declaration highlights the urgent need for collective action on issues like climate change, energy transition, and global inequality. It also reaffirms the G20’s commitment to the UN Charter and international law, calling for peaceful resolution of conflicts and respect for sovereignty.

The US, under President Donald Trump, boycotted the summit, citing disagreements with South Africa’s agenda and claims of anti-white policies. However, other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, expressed regret over the US absence, emphasizing the need for global cooperation
