By: Chilis Suzan Zukwa-Malusi Gigaba, former Minister of Public Enterprises, and his co-accused appeared in court today facing corruption charges related to the Transnet scandal. The charges stem from alleged irregular procurement activities during Gigaba’s tenure from 2010 to 2018, including a massive R54 billion locomotive procurement deal ¹ ².
Gigaba has maintained his innocence, stating, “My conscience is clear regarding my conduct in office.” He expressed confidence in the courts, saying, “They are the forum where facts, not fiction, will finally prevail” ².
The case is part of a broader investigation into state capture and corruption at Transnet, one of South Africa’s critical state-owned enterprises. Several former Transnet executives, including previous CEOs Siyabonga Gama and Brian Molefe, have also faced legal scrutiny in connection with the scandal
