Parliamentary Committee to Review Progress on Mkhwanazi Allegations
By: Chilis Suzan Zukwa: The Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to review its interim progress report, update outstanding consultations, and deliberate on its proposed programme moving forward. The committee, established to probe serious allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference within South Africa’s justice system, has been hearing testimony from key witnesses, including Mkhwanazi himself.
The committee’s work follows Mkhwanazi’s explosive claims in July 2025 about a sophisticated crime syndicate, referred to as the “Big Five,” allegedly embedded within law enforcement and intelligence structures. The allegations have sparked intense scrutiny, with the committee focusing on potential political interference, corrupt relationships, and procurement irregularities within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Key figures who have testified before the committee include Mkhwanazi, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibuyi, among others.
The committee’s next steps are crucial in determining the extent of corruption and political interference within SAPS and the justice system.
