BREAKING NEWS: Mkhwanazi Backtracks on Bheki Cele Allegations Amid Ongoing Probe
In a stunning turn of events, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has withdrawn allegations he made during parliamentary hearings implicating former Police Minister Bheki Cele in receiving money from controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Speaking to reporters today, Mkhwanazi clarified that further investigation led to the retraction of his earlier testimony linking Cele to suspicious financial transactions with Matlala.
“The investigation has evolved, and based on additional evidence and reviews, I’ve withdrawn my previous statements regarding alleged payments between Bheki Cele and Vusimuzi Matlala,” Mkhwanazi said. “We remain committed to transparency and accuracy in uncovering the truth about corruption allegations within SAPS.” He stressed the probe is ongoing, with multiple officials still under scrutiny.
Bheki Cele, who had previously stated he’d disclose any association with Matlala if officially summoned, welcomed the retraction. “I’ve always maintained my focus is fighting crime and protecting South Africans. I appreciate the clarification,” said Cele.
Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala remains in custody facing serious charges including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering linked to an October 2023 shooting of his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane. Matlala was denied bail and is at Kgosi Mampuru correctional centre in Pretoria.
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Police Corruption continue probing systemic corruption within South Africa’s police service. Other senior officials like suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya are also implicated in alleged networks of corruption and police interfere
