BREAKING NEWS: A Tunisian court has sentenced a 56-year-old day labourer to death for criticizing President Kais Saied on Facebook.

The man, identified as Saber Chouchane, was found guilty of insulting the president and assaulting state security through his social media posts.

This verdict has raised concerns about freedom of expression in Tunisia, which has been undergoing a democratic transition since the Arab Spring protests in 2011. The Tunisian League for Human Rights and Chouchane’s lawyer have condemned the sentence, calling it “shocking and unprecedented”.

Chouchane’s case is not isolated, as Tunisia has been experiencing a crackdown on dissent under President Saied’s rule. The president has been accused of consolidating power and undermining democratic institutions, including the judiciary and the media.

The death sentence has been appealed, and human rights groups are calling for Chouchane’s release and an end to the persecution of individuals exercising their right to free speech.
