BREAKING NEWS: Minister Senzo Mchunu told ANC supporters in Ulundi KZN that he will not resign as a police Minister because of some individuals called Police Coommissioners who want to control the entire police system.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has declared that he will not resign from his position, despite facing allegations of corruption and interference in police investigations. Mchunu’s statement comes after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of receiving payments from a corruption suspect and shielding politically connected individuals.
Background of the AllegationsThe allegations against Mchunu were made by Mkhwanazi, who claimed that the minister had received payments from a suspect involved in corruption. Mchunu has denied these allegations, stating that he welcomes the president’s decision to investigate and is willing to cooperate fully.
Mchunu’s ResponseMchunu emphasized his commitment to upholding the integrity of the police force, saying, “Honour and integrity are the virtues I personally subscribe to… I stand ready to respond to the accusations against me and account to the citizens of the Republic, fully and honestly so”. He has accepted President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place him on leave amid the allegations.
Investigation and ImplicationsA judicial commission of inquiry has been established to investigate the allegations against Mchunu, as well as claims of police corruption and interference. The commission must deliver reports within three and six months. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for Mchunu’s future as Police Minister and the ANC’s leadership.
It’s worth noting that there’s another individual with a similar name, Willies Mchunu, a former KwaZulu-Natal Premier who resigned from the ANC, citing loss of hope in the party’s commitment to its values
