Detectives Investigating DJ Sumbody’s Murder Receive Death Threats, Placed Under 24-Hour Guard
Two detectives probing the murder of South African rapper DJ Sumbody and other high-profile killings have been placed under 24-hour guard after receiving death threats and being followed by suspects’ families, friends, and allegedly a senior police officer. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) warned that the detectives’ lives are in “grave danger” due to their investigation into a hit squad linked to at least 10 killings.
The murder case involves Katiso “KT” Molefe, Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana, accused of killing DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards in November 2022. The suspects are also linked to the murders of DJ Vintos, Armand Swart, and Don Tindleni, with ballistics evidence connecting the same firearms to these crimes.
The NPA’s letter to national police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola and other top officials highlighted the urgent need for protection, citing organised criminals would “do everything in their ability to destroy the evidence and derail the trial”. The detectives were followed from court sessions in Vereeniging and Vaal, with threats allegedly coming from a senior police officer in the Vaal Rand and the suspects’ families and friends.
The investigation has uncovered a contract killing syndicate, with digital evidence revealing an organised and structured operation. Law enforcement agencies are working together to track down additional suspects and dismantle the network. The case has sparked widespread concern about organised crime networks operating in Gauteng.
The suspects’ bail application has been postponed, and they face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. The NPA is expected to centralize all related murder cases into a single trial, aiming to streamline prosecution and ensure justice for the victims’ families
