A 33-YEAR-OLD MALE SLAPPED WITH HEFTY SENTENCES FOR MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER
POLOKWANE: The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the hefty sentence handed down by Mokopane Regional Court on Tuesday, 15 July 2025 against a 33-year-old man, Collins Ledwaba for the murder of Nini Joseph Movundlela and attempted murder of other four victims, all residing at Moshate Village, in Mahwelereng Policing area.
The trial court found that on 2021-10-29 at around 10:10, the accused who was driving a taxi, he intentionally drove over at five people, and one person died at the scene. The other four victims were rushed to the local hospital with serious injuries, at Moshate Cross Road in Mahwelereng Policing area. This is after a taxi violence incident between the maxi taxi drivers and the taxi drivers at the area.
Police were notified, and a case of murder and four counts of attempted murder were opened. The same day, the accused was arrested.
Subsequent to the outstanding investigation skills by Detective Sergeant Price Baloyi of Mahwelereng Investigating Unit, the accused was sentenced to effective 18 years imprisonment for murder and four counts of attempted murder. The sentence was handed as follows:
- Count 1, murder: 15 years imprisonment
- Count 2, attempted murder: 03 years imprisonment
- Count 3, attempted murder: 03 years imprisonment
- Count 4, attempted murder: 03 years
- Count 5, attempted murder: 03 years imprisonment.
The court ordered that sentences on count 2, 3, 4 & 5 to run concurrently.
The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has appreciated the investigating officer and everyone involved until the accused was sentenced.
