SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR DEALING IN ILLICIT GOLD

GAUTENG: A 33 year old suspect was arrested on Thursday, 22 May 2025 by members of the Johannesburg based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Johannesburg K9 and Benoni K9 for dealing with illicit gold.

On 22 May 2025, information was received by the Hawks about a suspect, who is allegedly dealing in illicit gold around Sandringham. The police followed up on the information and the suspect vehicle was spotted driving on Swindler road and Lee Street. The police stopped the vehicle and searched it. During the search of the vehicle, police discovered 5 grams of illicit gold, and R8100 cash. The suspect led the police to another property at Sandler street and upon arrival, the property was searched and 600 grams of illicit gold was discovered as well as cash amount of R300 000.

The illicit gold with an estimated value of R900 000 and cash amount of R308 100 were seized by the police. The suspect is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 26 May 2025.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa has commended the multidisplinary team for the exceptional work done and making sure that information received led to the arrest of the suspect.
