EFF STATEMENT ON THE LIMPOPO NATIONAL SHUTDOWN.
Tuesday, 21 March 2023.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo sends its sincere gratitude to
the people of Limpopo for coming out in their numbers to support the EFF’s
peaceful shutdown to demand the immediate resignation of Cyril Ramaphosa
and an end to Loadshedding.
The shutdown was an eventful and successful program of action held across
the five regions of Limpopo on Monday, 20 March 2023, where normal day to
day activities came to a standstill. Shopping malls were closed while transport
services were halted, however some mini-bus taxis that insisted on operating
were without commuters and remained with empty seats for the remainder of
the shutdown.
It was a historic day, wherein the EFF was able to stand up for the less
privileged and everyone bearing the brunt of unemployment, poverty,
inequality, GBV and corruption amongst other man-made challenges. For the
first time after many years of endless Loadshedding, the people of South Africa
didn’t experience Loadshedding because the EFF took to the streets.
We strongly commend the EFF members for their high discipline throughout
the demonstrations across the province, despite provocations and
intimidations by some taxi operators against our members in Tzaneen,
Burgersfort, and Jane Furse. It became evident that their motive was to
defocus the EFF from succeeding with the peacefulness of the shutdown,
therefore this behaviour must be condemned with the contempt it deserves.
We note with utmost concern that some members of the EFF were arrested in
the Capricorn and Waterberg regions for exercising their right to protest. Our
legal representatives are working hard to ensure that that the affected
members are released, so that they can continue serving the organisation in
the interest of the people.
In a democratic society, there should never be no go areas, the EFF is a protest
movement and our right to protest must be protected and respected.
Furthermore, the EFF is not responsible for public violence or any criminality
that may have occurred on Monday, 20 March 2023 because the shutdown
was held peacefully.
Lastly, we call on the youth, the elderly and all the people of Limpopo to reject
the ANC and place their trust in the EFF. The EFF in Limpopo shall continue
leading the fight against corrupt governance and poor service delivery.
