We are currently seeking a Packaging Process Operator to join our high-performing operations team. This role is central to ensuring that our packaged products consistently meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. Role Purpose

The primary purpose of the Packaging Process Operator role is to operate, monitor, and maintain packaging processes to achieve optimal throughput with minimal variability in product quality and minimal waste. The incumbent will ensure that packaging operations run safely, efficiently, and in strict accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality standards, and occupational health and safety requirements.

This role requires a hands-on, detail-oriented individual who can respond quickly to process deviations, perform routine maintenance and cleaning tasks, and actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the packaging plant.


Key Responsibilities

1. Packaging Operations and Process Control

  • Operate assigned sub-processes within the packaging plant in line with approved SOPs and work instructions.
  • Support and interact with the plant control systems to verify that all process parameters remain within defined limits.
  • Monitor process performance continuously to ensure stability, consistency, and compliance with quality standards.
  • Identify process deviations early and take corrective action to prevent the production of non-conforming products.

2. Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure that all raw materials, packaging components, and finished products conform to company, regional, and regulatory quality standards.
  • Conduct routine quality checks and inspections at defined intervals as per standard operating procedures.
  • Accurately record quality results in the designated information systems and escalate any deviations immediately.
  • Participate in investigations related to quality non-conformances and support the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

3. Start-Up and Changeover Activities

  • Prepare the packaging plant for start-up by verifying that brand changes, product specifications, and process parameters are correctly identified and implemented.
  • Ensure that all required inputs—including utilities, packaging materials, documentation, and calibrated equipment—are available and fit for purpose prior to start-up.
  • Perform visual inspections of equipment and work areas to confirm readiness and availability for production.
  • Execute changeovers efficiently while maintaining safety, quality, and productivity standards.

4. Safe Operation and Occupational Health & Safety

  • Operate all equipment in strict compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental (OH&S) requirements.
  • Apply safe work practices at all times and actively participate in hazard identification and risk mitigation activities.
  • Adhere to lock-out, tag-out, and permit-to-work procedures when performing maintenance or cleaning tasks.
  • Take immediate action to correct unsafe conditions or behaviors and report incidents, near-misses, or hazards to the appropriate authority.

5. Shutdown and Cleaning Procedures

  • Shut down packaging equipment in accordance with approved work instructions, ensuring that all deviations are documented.
  • Perform Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) activities, including sampling and measurement of CIP outputs to verify cleaning effectiveness.
  • Carry out external cleaning of plant equipment and surrounding work areas, ensuring compliance with hygiene and cleanliness standards.
  • Conduct visual inspections to confirm that equipment and workspaces meet cleanliness requirements before restart.

6. Materials and Input Control

  • Control and manage the usage of packaging inputs and consumables to meet regional and site-specific requirements.
  • Monitor stock levels, conduct regular quality checks on materials, and ensure correct storage in designated and demarcated areas.
  • Track and analyze usage ratios to identify inefficiencies, losses, or opportunities for improvement.

7. Maintenance Support and Plant Availability

  • Support plant availability by ensuring that scheduled maintenance activities are carried out as planned.
  • Identify unplanned or ad hoc maintenance requirements and escalate them to the relevant stakeholders for resolution.
  • Assist team members in identifying root causes of equipment breakdowns and recurring issues.
  • Provide on-shift support to Packaging Artisans during running repairs and maintenance interventions.
  • Perform autonomous maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and minor adjustments in line with maintenance schedules.

8. Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

  • Continuously review process performance against defined targets and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Record short stops, downtime events, and process losses accurately to enable effective analysis.
  • Initiate corrective actions when performance does not meet targets or when trends indicate potential problems.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, problem-solving sessions, and operational excellence programs.

9. Waste Management and Cost Control

  • Record waste accurately on the appropriate documentation or information systems.
  • Analyze waste trends to identify root causes, recurring issues, and opportunities for waste reduction.
  • Implement corrective actions to minimize waste and improve overall process efficiency.

10. Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Respond promptly to upstream or downstream process triggers that may result in out-of-control situations.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies as defined in the problem-solving work practices.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve operational challenges effectively.

11. Housekeeping and 5S Implementation

  • Perform housekeeping duties in line with 5S principles to maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment.
  • Identify and correct unsafe or inefficient work practices.
  • Promote a culture of discipline, accountability, and pride in the workplace.

12. Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Assist fellow team members in the execution of their duties to ensure smooth and continuous operations.
  • Share knowledge, skills, and best practices to strengthen team capability and performance.
  • Contribute positively to team morale and a culture of mutual respect.

13. Documentation and Reporting

  • Complete all required documentation accurately and timeously, including job cards, COSWIN notifications, and shift reports.
  • Ensure that all records are maintained in accordance with company policies and audit requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric certificate (Technical Matric or Matric with Mathematics and Physical Science preferred).
  • National Certificate N3 as a minimum qualification.
  • Demonstrated mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Basic computer literacy, including the ability to use Microsoft Office applications.
