THREE STUDENTS TO APPEAR IN POLOKWANE MAGISTRATE’S COURT FOLLOWING PUBLIC VIOLENCE AT UNIVERSITY OF VENDA

POLOKWANE: Police in Thohoyandou continue to monitor an unrest situation at the University of Venda which started on Sunday night, 03 May 2026.
It is alleged that students embarked on protest action relating to grievances with the management of the institution. During the unrest, students allegedly blocked roads leading into the university premises and vandalised some road signs.

Public Order Policing (POP) members were deployed to monitor the situation and maintain public order.Students also handed over a memorandum of demands to the university management on Tuesday, 05 May 2026.

Police have since arrested three students aged between 18 and 26 for charges relating to public violence and contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

The suspects were initially expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 08 May 2026. However, for safety reasons, the matter has been transferred to the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court where the suspects are now expected to appear.

At this stage, no state vehicles have been damaged during the protest action.

Police investigations are continuing.
