Introduction

The Learner Maintenance (Unemployed Production) Learnership Programme is a structured, outcomes-based development opportunity designed for motivated, unemployed individuals who are eager to build a strong foundation in maintenance, production, and manufacturing operations. This programme is ideal for candidates who aspire to gain practical workplace exposure while earning a nationally recognised qualification that enhances employability within the manufacturing and engineering sectors.

This learnership combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practical training in a real industrial environment. Learners will be exposed to a variety of production, maintenance, and safety-related activities that are critical to modern manufacturing operations. The programme is carefully designed to develop technical competence, workplace discipline, and professional behaviour, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for future employment or further technical studies.

Purpose of the Learnership Programme

The primary purpose of the Learner Maintenance Learnership Programme is to equip unemployed individuals with essential technical, operational, and safety skills required in a manufacturing and production environment. Through structured training and supervised workplace experience, learners will gain a clear understanding of how production systems operate, how maintenance activities support operational efficiency, and how safety and quality standards are applied in an industrial setting.

The programme also aims to:

  • Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical workplace application
  • Develop entry-level technical and maintenance competencies
  • Promote a strong safety culture and adherence to operational procedures
  • Enhance employability through the achievement of an NQF Level 3 qualification
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and professional work ethics

Upon successful completion, learners will be better positioned to pursue careers in manufacturing, engineering support, maintenance, or related technical fields.

Scope of Training and Learning Areas

During the learnership, learners will complete a comprehensive training curriculum that covers both core and elective learning areas relevant to production and maintenance operations. The training includes, but is not limited to, the following key areas:

1. Working Effectively in a Team

Learners will be trained on how to function productively within a team-based work environment. This includes understanding team roles, communication protocols, conflict resolution, and collaboration across different departments. Emphasis is placed on mutual respect, accountability, and shared responsibility for achieving production goals.

2. Safety Practices and Hand Tools

Safety is a critical component of the programme. Learners will receive training on workplace health and safety principles, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work procedures. The correct selection, use, and maintenance of hand tools will be covered in detail to ensure safe and efficient task execution.

3. Assembly and Manufacturing Processes

Learners will gain exposure to basic assembly and manufacturing processes commonly used in industrial production. This includes understanding production flow, material handling, quality checks, and adherence to standard operating procedures. Practical activities will reinforce theoretical concepts and promote attention to detail.

4. Engineering Drawings and Marking-Off

The programme includes training on reading and interpreting basic engineering and manufacturing drawings. Learners will develop the ability to understand symbols, dimensions, and tolerances, as well as perform marking-off tasks accurately in preparation for manufacturing or assembly activities.

5. Welding Fundamentals

Basic welding principles and practices form part of the training. Learners will be introduced to welding safety, equipment handling, and fundamental welding techniques used in maintenance and production environments. This exposure builds awareness of fabrication and repair processes.

6. Operating and Monitoring Production Machines

Learners will be trained to operate and monitor selected production machines under supervision. This includes understanding machine functions, start-up and shutdown procedures, basic troubleshooting, and the importance of monitoring performance to ensure consistent output and quality.

7. Surface Preparation Techniques

Training in surface preparation will cover cleaning, grinding, and preparation methods required prior to assembly, welding, or finishing processes. Learners will understand how proper surface preparation contributes to product quality and durability.

8. Fire Fighting and Emergency Response

Fire safety training is an essential component of the programme. Learners will receive instruction on fire prevention, fire-fighting equipment, emergency procedures, and evacuation protocols to ensure readiness in the event of an emergency.

9. Operations and Dispatch of Products

Learners will be exposed to basic operations and dispatch processes, including packaging, labeling, documentation, and coordination with logistics functions. This provides an understanding of how finished products move from production to delivery.

Qualifications and Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum educational requirements to be considered for the learnership. These requirements ensure that learners have the foundational knowledge necessary to successfully complete the programme.

Minimum Qualifications:
