Ford South Africa to Retrench Hundreds of Workers Amid Auto Industry Crisis
Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has announced plans to retrench over 474 employees at its Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and Struandale Engine Plant in Gqeberha. The decision affects 391 operator positions in Silverton, 73 at Struandale, and 10 administrative roles.
The company cites the need to “realign” its production capacity to match current and projected market demand, amid economic pressures and international political uncertainties. Ford South Africa emphasized that the retrenchments are not directly linked to the recent tariffs imposed by the United States on South African vehicle exports.
The retrenchments have sparked concerns about the future of the automotive industry in South Africa, with trade union Solidarity warning of potential further job losses. “When an automotive giant like Ford takes such drastic steps, it is a warning to the entire industry,” said Willie Venter, deputy general secretary of Solidarity. “We fear that further retrenchments in this industry may be inevitable if conditions do not improve quickly.
Ford South Africa has committed to supporting affected employees, with voluntary separation options available and consultations with unions underway. The company understands the impact of the retrenchments on its valued employees.
South Africa’s automotive industry employs 115,000 people directly, with over 80,000 in component manufacturing alone. The sector has faced significant challenges, including low domestic sales, an influx of imports, and low levels of local content, resulting in 12 company closures and over 4,000 job losses in the past two years
