IMPOSTER POSING AS POLICE CAPTAIN IN RECRUITMENT SCAM SENTENCED TO A FINE OF R3000 OR TWO YEARS IMPRISONMENT

POLOKWANE: The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 28 February 2024, sentenced a 31-year-old man on charges of fraud and corruption after he tried to scam a female victim by posing as
Police Captain.

Titus Maake was sentenced to a fine of R3000,00. or two years imprisonment.

The court heard that the
imposter, in 2019, pretended to be a Police Captain working in provincial human resources management. He called an unsuspecting female victim who wanted to be recruited into the SAPS to deposit a certain amount of money through the cash send for a medical report.The vigilant woman reported the matter to the Polokwane Police Station and a case of fraud was opened.

The case was transferred to the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit and assigned to Sergeant Mokhepho Gafane. The unknown suspect was arrested in February 2020, at his rental place in Seshego outside Polokwane, after an extensive investigation by Sergeant Gafane, who managed to unveil his involvement in the sophisticated scam targeting job seekers.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has praised the individual person for her vigilance and being a responsible citizen.

” This conviction serves as a stern warning to individuals contemplating engaging in such unlawful activities that the law will take its course, and justice will be served.” Concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
