PROSECUTOR AND HIS CO-ACCUSED TRIAL SET FOR APRIL

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) suspended an employee working as District Court Prosecutor in the Frazenburg Magistrate Court, Mortlan Kiewiets, and his four co-accused has adjourned in the Fraserburg Magistrates’’ Court and will resume on 15 April 2024Y, in the magistrates’ court.

The accused Leonard Ricket, Rufus Snyers, Jan Baadjies, Jason Pienaar, as well as Mortlan Kiewiets, are facing charges of theft, usage of vehicle without consent as well as trespassing. The 33-year-old Prosecutor together with four other accused were arrested and charged with theft of sheep worth thousands of rands. The sheep which are referred to as Melkskaap, were specifically bred by the complainant family. The trial which started in September 2023, saw several witnesses called by the state.

The complainant who is the caretaker of his father’s farm and hard of sheep, told the court during his testimony that these types of sheep were specifically bred by his father, and they are very special, and one can cost more than R30 000, depending on certain specific breeding genetics. The trial will resume in April 2024, where the state is expected to call more witnesses, in its endeavour to build its case. The accused are all out on warning and the trial will resume on Monday 15 April 2024, and it is expected to adjourn on 18 April 2024, in the Fraserburg Magistrates’ Court.
