RAPE ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST MUNICIPAL WARD COUNCILOR WITHDRAWN

The charges of rape against Lehlohonolo Ramajoe, who is a Ward Councilor in the Moqhaka Local Municipality, which forms part of Fezile Dabi District Municipality, in the Northern Cape, have been withdrawn in the Viljoenskroon District Court after the complainant issued a withdrawal statement to the state.

Ramajoe was arrested on 03 December 2023, after the complainant opened a case of rape against the accused in the Viljoenskroon Police Station. After concentrated and comprehensive investigations by Members of the South African Police Services, the accused was arrested and charged with rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. On 20 December 2023, during his bail application in this schedule 5 matter, the Prosecution successfully opposed his bail, and he was remanded in custody.

Investigations that were led by highly experienced and trained investigators within the South African Police Service were continuing when the complainant informed the state that she would be withdrawing the charges against the accused. The accused was then released by the court. The National Prosecuting Authority which is the custodian of prosecution and People’s Lawyers continues to prosecute without fear, favour, or prejudice.
