ZIMBABWEAN NATIONAL SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS DIRECT IMPRISONMENT FOR UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF EXPLOSIVES

The Musina Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a Zimbabwean national, Josephat Bayayi (43), to 15 years of direct imprisonment for the importation of unlawful explosives and unlawful possession of explosives. The accused pleaded guilty and stated that on 08 July 2023, at Beitbridge port of entry, he was found by a SARS official in possession of 1636 units of explosives, and he was arrested on the spot by Police officers.

In aggravation of the sentence, the state Prosecutor Jan Krijt argued that there are no substantial or compelling circumstances for the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence and in fact, the accused should be given an additional five years, given the prevalence of the offence and quantity which he was found.

The NPA welcomes the sentence and applauds the good work done by Mr Krijt and Investigating officer, Rhandzu Masuluke from the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI). We hope that the would-be offenders of these crimes will learn from the sentence imposed.
