SIX ACCUSED IN THE MHLATUZE WATER BOARD R37 MILLION FRAUD APPEARED IN COURT

PRETORIA – Nofezile Charon Mhlanga (32) as well as a juristic person (NCD Investments), Siyabonga Bhengu (39), Sibongiseni Duduzile Chiliza (50), Amita Badul (62), Nica Gevers (68) and Silas Zwelakhe Hlophe (45) appeared in the Durban Magistrates court on 23 June 2023 following their arrest by the National Clean Audit Task Team of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation earlier the morning facing charges of fraud, money laundering, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

In the quest to root out corruption and maladministration within the municipalities, an intensive investigation into allegations of irregular appointment of service providers (Legal panel) without following the Supply Chain Management protocols of the Mhlathuze Water Board, as well as contravention of section 51(1) of the Public Finance Management Act, Act 1 of 1999 by not complying with the operational policies of the public entity. 

All accused were granted bail as follows: Nofezile Mhlanga and her company NCD Investments (R10 000.00), Siyabonga Bhengu (R5 000.00), Sibongiseni Chiliza (R5 000.00), Amita Badul (R5 000.00), Nica Gevers (R10 000.00) and Zwelakhe Hlophe (R10 000.00).  All the accused’s were requested to surrender their passports. The case was postponed to Thursday, 29 June 2023.
