Limpopo Province to launch the first-ever designated Official Publication Depository
(OPD)
The Acting MEC for the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Mavhungu
Lurule-Ramakhanya will launch the first ever designated Official Publication Depository
(OPD) Polokwane City Library. The launch of such a facility is in line with the Legal
Depository Act that provides for the preservation of national documentary heritage
through a compulsory system whereby all publishers are required to ensure the legal
deposit of published documents are kept. All published documents will therefore require
to be preserved, catalogued on a legal deposit at this library.
An official publications depository shall serve as a centre for promoting public awareness
of, and access to, official publications and information held by the government and the
institutions listed in terms of section 3 of the Reporting by Public Entities Act, 1992 (Act
93 of 1992); and provide public access to databases and other information sources to
which the public may gain access under any law.
Official publications depositories shall be entitled to receive a copy of each official
publication published in South Africa and shall give free access without charge to these
documents, and to official publications in electronic format as well as to official on-line
information that is made available to the public.
The launch will assist in ensuring efficient and effective usage of the Official Publication
Depository.
