NPA EXPLORING ALL OPTIONS BASED ON EXISTING EVIDENCE IN BESTER CASE
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirms that they have provisionally withdrawn a charge of murder against the accused in the Thabo Bester case after further evidence was presented to them by the investigating team.
Currently, there is insufficient evidence for the NPA to pursue a charge of murder hence the NPA has taken a decision to provisionally withdraw the charge of murder pending further investigation. Considering the importance of fully uncovering the tragic events that led to the death of Katlego Bereng, so that the family can have closure,
The NPA is working closely with the SAPS to ensure that no stone is left unturned to get to the truth. This aspect of the investigation is a high priority. The investigations are ongoing and the possibility of more accused and more charges being added cannot be ruled out.
The accused are currently facing serious charges relating to corruption, fraud, defeating the ends of justice, escaping from custody, assisting an inmate to escape, and violation of a body, amongst others and the NPA will vigorously oppose bail on these charges.
