MEC FOR PUBLIC WORKS, ROADS AND INFRASTRUCTURE SAYS DEPARTMENT WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ROADS INFRASTRUCTURE IN LIMPOPO

Limpopo Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale says the department is determined to realise improved roads infrastructure in the province. MEC Rakgoale has been reacting to the recent appointment of 21 contractors by Roads Agency Limpopo, to patch potholes and re-gravel roads that are in a dire state.

Today, the 17th of March 2023, the Department’s District Heads, representatives of local municipalities, as well as Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) senior managers met with 21 appointed contractors to do routine road maintenance and re-gravelling across the province. This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between municipalities and Roads Agency Limpopo to fix potholes in eight municipalities in the province. The agency will also work jointly with the department’s roads unit to re-gravel identified gravel roads.

RAL is targeting the patching of about 160 thousand square metres of potholes and to re-gravel roads at an estimated budget of R260 million.

Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale, says the appointment of the contractors will come in handy as it will also help to repair some of the roads that have been ravaged by the recent floods experienced in the province.

“This initiative will bring relief to road users, as these contractors will extend their pothole patching work to city centres, townships of local municipalities, as well as identified access gravel roads to villages to enable smooth and easy access for traffic and pedestrians. This is in fact an acceleration of Operation Thiba Mekoti Ditseleng which we launched in August last year. We also want to urge communities and the motoring public to exercise patience with the department, which is working tirelessly to improve roads infrastructure in the province.” says MEC Rakgoale.

The actual work is expected to start just after the finalisation of all due processes that need to be followed before the actual construction work could start.
