LIMPOPO HEALTH MEC DR PHOPHI RAMATHUBA TO LAUNCH HPV VACCINATION CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE CERVICAL CANCER IN YOUNG GIRLS

Limpopo Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba will launch the 2023 Human Papillomavirus(HPV) vaccination campaign against the cervical cancer in young girls at Thabanaswana primary school at Apelcross GaMasemola village and Machacha primary school at GaMmachacha village in Sekhukhune District.

Human papillomavirus(HPV) is an infection that causes warts in various parts of the body, depending on the strain and is the most common sexually transmitted infection(STI). A person with HPV can pass the infection to someone even when they have no signs or symptoms and a dozen types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer.

“As the Department, we will be embarking in a massive campaign to provide the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines among the school-going girls 9 and 10 in grade 4. The drive of this intervention is to implement the one of the four basic component of cervical cancer control, namely primary prevention. Our teams will visit public and special education schools during February to administer free HPV vaccination to girls in grade 4 and who have already turned 9 and older. We are making a call to parents to sign the consent forms which they receive from the school that the child attends,”said MEC Ramathuba.
