Health Deputy Minister to host breakfast farewell with Cuban Medical students

Pretoria: The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo will tomorrow (Wednesday) host and address a breakfast farewell ceremony for the latest group of medical students set to join the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro (NMFC) Medical Training Programme before they depart for Cuba later in the afternoon.

The group consists of twenty (20) medical students who have been recruited to undergo medical training in Cuba where they will be joined by fellow students from other provinces at a later stage.

The group is scheduled to commence their academic programme with Spanish lessons once they settle in Cuba.

The new recruits will be accompanied health officials to ensure their safe travel to Cuba.

The NMFC programme was established by presidents Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro in 1996 as part of the various bilateral agreements between South Africa and Cuba.

The programme was established to address the over-concentration of health personnel in urban areas and in the exclusionary private sector; insufficient personnel who were also not in possession of the necessary training and the under-provision of health care in rural and peri-urban areas, as well as informal settlements.

Members of the media are invited to join the event as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 15 February 2023
Venue: Premier Hotel, OR Tambo – Kempton Park
Time: 08h00
