MEMBERS OF PROVINCIAL ILLEGAL MINING TASK TEAM APPREHEND TWO SUSPECTS AND CONFISCATE MINING EQUIPMENT

POLOKWANE: Members of the Provincial Illegal Mining Unit assisted by the local members from Driekop Police station conducted a joint illegal mining operation at Ga-Maroga village on Saturday 28 January 2023, led to the arrest of two suspected illegal miners aged 22 and 53.

Police were informed about the illegal mining activities that were ongoing in Maroga mountain and upon their arrival, they found a group people who immediately fled in different directions.

The two men, a South African and a foreign national were caught and the following mining equipment were seized:

  1. 02 Generators.
  2. 05 Jack Hammers.
  3. 04 Picks.
  4. 08 Wheel barrows.
  5. 09 Shovels.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the members for the persistent disruptive operations against illegal mining activities.

The suspects will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate court today on Monday 30 January 2023 facing charges of illegal mining. The foreign national will, in addition, face a charge of contravening the Immigration Act as he is in the country illegally.
