SAPS OBSERVES NATIONAL POLICE DAY
Polokwane, 27 January 2023; Employees of the South African Police Service(SAPS) countrywide observed and celebrated National Police Day under the theme “ Reset, Recharge, Take Charge!”.
This year’s celebrations were held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
On this day in 1995, the South African Police Service Act 1995 (Act No 68 of 1995) which is the framework of the organisation, was promulgated on 27 January 1995. In 2005 Cabinet approved 27 January as National Police Day.
On National Police Day, the SAPS recognises the sacrifices made by our men and women in blue and continue to make as they serve and protect all people living in South Africa.
It is also a day where the management takes stock of the year’s gains and strides made in executing their constitutional mandate as provided for in Section 205 of the Constituition.
Those who sacrificed their lives and died in the line of duty are also remembered.
As is tradition, SAPS employees from all nine provinces took part in various sporting codes from running, aerobics, tug of war, to soccer and netball games.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola says National Police Day is about celebrating the determination and commitment of employees on a journey to make South Africa a much safer and better place to live in.
“I would like to say to you all, by the virtue of you performing your duties with so much grace and distinction, in serving your country, that makes us as SAPS management to be very proud of you. You are truly heroes and heroines in every sense of the word – and for that, we say to you, thank you for being of great service to your country”, said General Fannie Masemola.
The week-long activities, which kicked off with the SAPS Career Day where various units showcased their expertise, to the SAPS fundraising Golf Day that aims to raise funds for the educational needs of the children of police officers who died in the line of duty, will culminate with the National Excellence Awards where employees will be awarded for their efforts in rendering an efficient and selfless service to the country.
