SAPS FUNDRAISING EVENT RAISES R3 MILLION FOR THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN OF POLICE OFFICERS WHO DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY.

Polokwane, 27 January 2023: The South African Police Service(SAPS) held a Golf Day fundraising event to raise funds for the educational needs of the children of the police officers who died in the line of duty.

A total of 100 players from various organisations and private companies came together to tee off to raise funds for the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund (SAPSET).

Through the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) Fund the Service is able to provide financial support to the educational needs to many of the children of deceased members. SAPSET currently funds children from grade RR to tertiary level. To date, the Fund has assisted more than 1000 children with their educational needs.

Edzani Mabada and Tsireledzo Velly Munyai represented the beneficiaries of the trust at the event.

25-year-old Edzani Mabada is the daughter of the late Warrant Officer Thomas Mabada who was killed in the line of duty in 2015. She took the opportunity to pay gratitude to the Trust for providing the necessary support in enabling her to obtain a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

“SAPSET has been there for us through difficult times as a family since my dad died in 2015 and as much as we can’t feel his presence physically, we can feel it through the SAPS Education Trust. I have two siblings and they were funded by the Trust. My younger sister completed her matric last year and she is going to university and my elder brother completed his studies and he is currently working. Without the funds honestly we not would be where we are today in life. It has done a lot us as family to change our lives. I would to thank you and appreciate the SAPS, donors and sponsors”, she said

Tsireledzo Vellay Munyai (26) also lost his father in the line of duty. He also completed his Degree in Animal Health from the North West University after being funded by SAPSET.

“The Trust was always there for me and they were never hesitant when I needed help. When you have lost a parent you need not only financially support but also emotional support. I have learnt to be part of the family of men and women in blue. If it was not the SAPSET, I could have fallen off or somewhere else on the street committing crime which my father died while fighting against it”, said Munyai.

The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele paid gratitude to all sponsors and donors for ploughing back to the children of the police who died in the line of duty. He also urged the newly appointed SAPSET of Trustees to go an extra mile to raise more funds.

“We can only ensure that the kids of the fallen police are taken care of. The SAPS should continue to be a caring organisation for these kids and do what their parents could have done if they were still alive. The new board of trustees must find ways to raise more funds and make it grow. Thank you very much for the contributions you have made for the good cause”. Said Minister Cele

Partnerships from donors and sponsors support is fundamental to the success of SAPSET. The SAPS hereby invites SAPS members, the business community and the public to partner with us in giving these young people the same chance in life that we would wish for our families.
