Deputy Minister Dhlomo to visit a new prostate cancer facility at Steve Biko Hospital

Pretoria: The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo together with the European Union Commissioner of Health and Food Safety, Ms Stella Kyriakides will, on Thursday, 26 January conduct a site-visit to new state of art prostate cancer facility currently under construction at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

The initiative emanated from the collaboration between the University of Pretoria and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre conceptualised in 2017 to offer services to prostate cancer to South African patients. In South Africa, prostate cancer is one of the top five cancers reported amongst men.

More than 300 South African prostate cancer patients have been successfully treated with the Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT) through this collaboration.

The treatment is offered to prostate cancer patients through compassionate use and improved protocols for patient treatment.

According to the University, other joint studies will lead to the development of targeted alpha therapy for other types of cancers with particular focus on breast cancer.

The Pretoria site-visit will be followed by a visit to mRNA Vaccine Technology Transfer Hub – Afrigen Biologies and Biovac Institute in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 January 2023.
