TRANSPORT DEPUTY MINISTER CHIKUNGA INTESIFIES FESTIVE SEASON ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN VHEMBE, LIMPOPO

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga together with Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms. Florence Radzilani will intensify all efforts to save the lives of road users during the 2022 Festive Season Road Safety campaign in the Vhembe District, Limpopo.

One of the most pressing concerns facing modern society today both internationally and in South Africa in particular, is the unnecessary loss of lives as a result of the carnage on the roads.

Road crashes are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of fatalities globally which has seen rising calls for more safer and responsible road user behaviour as well as intensified educational awareness regarding road safety in order to meet injury and fatality reduction targets as set through the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign 2021- 2030.

The Deputy Minister and MEC together with key road safety stakeholders and partners as well as senior government officials will interact with motorists, passengers as well as pedestrians to spread the message of road safety as the 2022 Festive Season builds up.

Law enforcement officials will also join the Deputy Minister and MEC for a multi disciplinary law enforcement operation pulling all stops to ensure that motorists, passengers and pedestrians alike observe all the rules and are safe on the roads.

Festive season activities in South Africa are associated with increased traffic volumes and increased road crash incidents – the large proportion of road crash victims usually being pedestrians and passengers as a result of lack of, and in some cases, the non use of safety belts and jaywalking. The visit is happening Saturday, 10 December 2022 at Road R524 Dzindi, just before you reach Thohoyandou from 07h00
