The Ulundi Regional Court has sentenced a 29-year-old man, to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter in November 2021, in the Nkonjeni area, in Ulundi. The 08-year-old girl was sent to live with her father and his family, as there were too many men living at her mother’s homestead. Her mother did this to protect the child, however, her father raped her whenever his family members were not around. When the child visited her mother a month later, she reported that she didn’t want to live with her father, as he was raping her. The child was taken to a doctor who confirmed the abuse and her father was immediately arrested.

In court, Advanced Regional Court Prosecutor, Mzwandile Mtshali led the evidence of the child, her mother and a medical doctor. Mtshali also handed in a Victim Impact Statement compiled by the child and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer, Mandisa Sikhakhane. In her statement, the child said that she feels like her father does not like her; and she gets jealous when she sees her peers sharing special moments with their fathers. She also said that she feels that her body is dirty and needs cleansing.

The man was sentenced accordingly and the court deemed him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name is entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders. The court also instructed the Department of Correctional Services to contact the family, before considering him for parole.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes this successful prosecution. It is our mandate to prosecute and get justice for all, especially those belonging to vulnerable groups. We hope that this sentence will deter like-minded individuals. We commend the work done by the Prosecution and SAPS.
