TWO SUSPECTS NABBED FOR ATTEMPTING TO ENTICE AN INVESTIGATING OFFICER WITH R50 000 GRANTED BAIL

The Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court granted Zuzumuzi Manqonyana (48) and Peter Selenga (49), bail of R10000 each. Both the accused reside in the Gauteng Province, and their bail conditions are that Manqonyana should report at the Douglasdale police station every Friday, between 08h00 and 18h00, while Selenga was ordered to report at the Midrand police station every Friday, between 08h00 and 18h00. The matter was postponed to 31 January 2023, for further investigations.

The Hawks reported that the two were arrested by the North West Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team on Sunday, 23 October 2022, in Klerksdorp. They allegedly offered an investigating officer R50000 to get rid of a docket involving their friend who is a former senior municipality official. According to the Hawks, the pair was nabbed at the Hawks offices, moments after handing over R25000 and a bottle of Glenfiddich whisky to the investigating officer. Their vehicle was searched and R41500 was allegedly also found. They are facing charges of corruption. Meanwhile, the money and the vehicle have been seized for further investigation.

Owing to the serious nature of the offence, the matter has been transferred to the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit (SCCU) of the NPA, for a joint investigation with the Hawks in preparation for trial. The Provincial Head for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in North West – Major General Patrick Mbotho, together with the North West Director of Public Prosecutions, lauded the investigating officer for upholding the highest level of integrity and further warned people against such acts of criminality.
