DA Condemns ANC’s attempted power grab in Thabazimbi

On 21 October 2022, during an adjourned special council meeting, the ANC councillors and a former councillor of the Thabazimbi Residents’ Association met and declared themselves the new office bearers of the Thabazimbi local municipality.

This attempted power grab is unlawful and the fact that the ANC in the Waterberg welcomed this development, is indicative of the ANC’s utter disregard for the rule of law.

During council sitting, which did not quorate, there were no motions to remove office bearers on the agenda of the special council meeting and no prior notice was given.

In true ANC fashion, employees of the municipality who were not willing to partake in the illegal council meeting, were threatened, intimidated, and forced to stay in the council chamber.

The sergeant of arms eventually rescued the employees, who then had to receive treatment from a doctor due to shock and anxiety.

A court interdict was granted to halt the inauguration of the illegally elected cabal that was planned for tomorrow.

DA councillor Tokkie Swanepoel remains the duly elected mayor, councillor Butana Thlabadira (F4SD) remains the duly elected speaker and councillor SC Sikwane (TRA) remains the duly elected chief whip.

The DA will not accept any attempts to undermine the rule of law and will insist that the correct procedures and processes are followed at all times.
