General Worker – Health Risk Waste Management Plant

Job Title: Healthcare Waste Handler / Plant Operator

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely handle, move, and transport healthcare risk waste containers, boxes, and bags within the facility.
  • Load and offload waste from collection vehicles and transfer it to designated treatment areas.
  • Assist in operating waste treatment equipment such as autoclaves and shredders.
  • Sort, weigh, and label waste according to classification and treatment requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all work areas, including processing zones, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Follow strict protocols for infection control, environmental protection, and health & safety compliance.
  • Wear and properly use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment faults, or incidents to supervisors immediately.
  • Support recycling and waste minimisation initiatives by proper segregation.
  • Participate in safety drills, training sessions, and toolbox talks.
  • Assist in sterilisation, shredding, and destruction processes.
  • Keep records of daily waste movement and assist with basic administrative tasks when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10 / NQF Level 2 (Grade 12 is an advantage).
  • Previous experience in waste management, manufacturing, or environmental services is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of handling healthcare risk or hazardous waste is an advantage.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour safely.
  • Able to follow instructions and comply with health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

  • Work may involve high temperatures and noisy environments.
  • Mandatory use of PPE (safety boots, gloves, overalls, masks, etc.).
