Introduction

In line with the company’s internal recruitment policy, permanent employees who meet the minimum requirements will be considered first. Should suitable internal candidates not be identified, the selection process will be extended to include external applicants. Purpose of the Apprenticeship

The Apprentice – Heavy Equipment Mechanic programme aims to develop competent artisans who are capable of maintaining, repairing, diagnosing, and servicing heavy earthmoving and industrial equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements. The apprenticeship combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience under the guidance of qualified artisans and technical specialists.

Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic systems used in heavy equipment. Over the course of the programme, apprentices will progressively develop the skills and competencies required to function independently as qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanics.


Key Learning Areas and Exposure

During the apprenticeship period, candidates will receive structured training and on-the-job exposure in the following areas:

  • Preventative and corrective maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery
  • Diagnosis and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical faults
  • Use and care of hand tools, power tools, and specialised diagnostic equipment
  • Interpretation of technical drawings, manuals, and service schedules
  • Compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental standards
  • Application of quality control principles in mechanical repairs
  • Workshop discipline, housekeeping, and teamwork
  • Adherence to company policies, procedures, and ethical standards

The programme is physically demanding and requires a high level of commitment, reliability, and attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this apprenticeship opportunity, applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

  1. Educational Requirements
    • Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate) with the following subjects:
      • Mathematics (Core)
      • Physical Science
      • Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD)
  2. Technical Assessment
    • Applicants must successfully pass a compulsory Technical Assessment, which includes:
      • Numeracy evaluation
      • Literacy evaluation
  3. Physical Fitness and Medical Requirements
    • Due to the strenuous nature of the work, candidates must be in good physical health
    • Applicants must be willing to undergo and pass a medical fitness examination
  4. Driver’s Licence
    • A valid Code EB (08) driver’s licence is required
  5. Residency Requirement
    • Applicants must reside within a 50-kilometre radius of the Bell Customer Service Centre

Failure to meet any of the above minimum requirements will result in the application not being considered.


Added Advantages (Not Compulsory but Beneficial)

While not mandatory, the following qualifications, skills, and experience will serve as a strong advantage during the selection process:

  • Grade 12 with Mechanical Technology as a subject
  • N2 qualification in Diesel Trade Theory or Motor Trade Theory
  • National Vocational Certificate (NCV) Level 4 in Engineering Related Design (ERD), consisting of seven subjects in Automotive or related engineering fields
  • Previous working experience in the engineering or mechanical industry
  • Demonstrated competence in basic hand skills training
  • Possession of a valid passport, which may be beneficial for future training or operational requirements

Candidates with the above additional qualifications may be prioritised, provided all minimum requirements are met.
