SAPS THANKS SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS AND USERS FOR RAISING R42 134 FOR CHILDREN OF OFFICERS WHO DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Pretoria, 06 September 2025; Ahead of the the South African Police Service’s annual commemoration day to honour 27 fallen officers, the SAPS would like to take this opportunity to thank the social media community inclusive of social media influencers who raised funds and donated a total of R42 134 for the children of police officers who died in the line of duty.

The SAPS confirms that this money from back-a-buddy, a crowdfunding platform, has reflected in its SAPSET bank account.

What started of as a campaign to buy two cows for Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi quickly resulted in an exciting campaign to raise funds in support of the South African Police Education Trust Fund (SAPSET). This is after the senior officer declined the two cows in line with SAPS policies and regulations which outlines that police officers are not allowed to accept gifts for executing their duties.

The social media community was requested to redirect the funds to SAPSET to pay for school fees, buy school uniform and stationery for the children.

The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has on behalf of Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi and the men and women in blue thanked each of the social media users for their efforts and contributions.

“These funds will go a long way in assisting us to keep these children in school. To date, the fund has paid for school fees of more than 1700 children. More than 140 have already obtained their senior certificate and at least 54 have already obtained a post school qualification including diplomas and degrees”, said Gen Fannie Masemola .

To all the social media users who contributed to this good cause, may your pockets never run dry and may you continue to bless others as this espouses the true spirit of Ubuntu which South Africans are known for.

Since its inception in 2010, more than R21 million has been donated to ensure the children of these fallen officers stay in school.
