Limpopo Police Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Police Van and Truck
A devastating accident occurred on Thursday, August 14, 2025, along the R101 road between Mokopane and Mookgophong in Limpopo, South Africa. A South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle transporting 11 inmates to the Naboomspruit Magistrate’s Court collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of one police officer and six inmates. The inmates were awaiting trial at the Mokopane Police Station for various offenses.
Emergency services, including SAPS Accident Response Teams and Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance. Six inmates were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, including HF Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle, Polokwane Hospital, and Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane. Unfortunately, one of the injured inmates later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to seven.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, expressed sadness over the incident and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Susana Mathye, also visited the accident scene and urged motorists to exercise caution and patience during the investigation.
The R101 road between Mokopane and Mookgophong has been reopened to traffic after being closed for investigation and clearance. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid congestion, including the N1 from Zebediela Weighbridge for those traveling from Mokopane to Mookgophong, and the Mookgophong on- and off-ramps for those heading in the opposite direction.
