Fire at unregistered Johannesburg creche owned by Malawian national kills four toddlers
A devastating fire at an unregistered crèche in Mayfair, Johannesburg, claimed the lives of four toddlers, Nadia, Rehana, Patience, and Precious, all under four years old on May 19.
The blaze, believed to have been sparked by a heating device and fueled by illegal electrical connections, tore through a crowded house, leaving a community in mourning and authorities scrambling for answers.
The crèche, operated out of a single room in a residence housing at least 32 people, was among 50 slum properties flagged by city officials for safety violations since 2022 but never addressed.
The owner, a woman from Malawi, reportedly left the four children locked in her bedroom while she took her own two children and went to nearby shops. She has since vanished.
No criminal charges have been confirmed as investigations continue. Preliminary findings point to smoke inhalation as the cause of the children’s deaths.
Negligence at multiple levels failed these children.” City officials have vowed to investigate, but for the families of Nadia, Rehana, Patience, and Precious, the promises come too late. The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in overcrowded urban areas.
