POLICE ARREST 16 621 SUSPECTS FOR VARIOUS OFFENCES, SEIZE R3.2 MILLION WORTH OF CONTRABAND PRODUCTS INCLUDING 152 UNLICENSED FIREARMS DURING NATIONWIDE SHANELA OPERATIONS

PRETORIA- 19 January 2026: The South African Police Service (SAPS) is continuing to intensify its efforts in the fight against crime, with week-long operations carried out between 12 and 18 January 2026 resulting in the arrest of 16 621 suspects across the country.

These crime-fighting operations saw police tracing and apprehending 2 597 wanted indviduals for serious and violent crimes, and seized R3.2 million worth of contraband illegally imported into the country.

In addition, the operations also targeted the illegal alcohol trade and drunken driving offences, which led to the arrest of 754 suspects for dealing illegally in liquor as well as 945 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

MAJOR ARRESTS INCLUDED:

▶️ Murder: 169 suspects arrested (GP: 332, KZN: 32, EC: 27, WC: 27). These arrests send a clear message—those who take lives will face justice.
▶️ Rape: 154 suspects arrested, with an additional 7 arrested for attempted rape. SAPS continues to protect women and children from predators.
▶️ Illegal firearms: 100 suspects arrested for illegal possession of firearms.
▶️ Drug Dealing: 334 suspects arrested for drug trafficking (KZN-79, WC-74, EC-58)
▶️ 3 051 suspects arrested for possession of drugs (WC-1 742, KZN-453, GP-316, EC-245)
▶️ Hijackings & Vehicle Theft: 25 suspects arrested for car hijackings and 12 for vehicle theft.
▶️ Driving Under the Influence: 945 suspects arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the past week (KZN: 320, MP: 276, GP: 114, EC: 90).
▶️ Illegal Migration: 1 346 suspected illegal migrants arrested (GP: 582, KZN: 213, FS: 164).
▶️ Aggravated Robbery: 76 suspects arrested for violent robberies.
▶️1 430 suspects for assault GBH

CONFISCATIONS AND RECOVERIES

Operation Shanela also pounce at the heart of criminal networks seizing dangerous goods and stolen property:
▶️ 152 firearms taken off the streets (including rifles, shotguns, and homemade weapons
▶️ Contraband worth R3.2 million confiscated
▶️ 24 594 alcoholic beverages seized
▶️110 436 units of crystal meth and 5 812 mandrax tablets confiscated
▶️ 55 stolen vehicles recovered (trailers, motorcycles, trucks, sedans, SUVs)
▶️ 20 131 kg of copper cables recovered, disrupting infrastructure sabotage
▶️ 1 475 abalone seized from poachers

TAKEDOWN OPERATION ACROSS THE PROVINCES

▶️ GAUTENG – PARKTOWN, 13 January 2026, five suspects were arrested for hijacking, kidnapping and murder of two women. Two women reported missing on 31 December 2025 were later found dead on 08 January 2026 at a plot in Poortjie near Orange Farm. Team of investigators traced and arrested suspects, and recovered an unlicensed firearm allegedly used in the commission of crime.

▶️ GAUTENG – 15 January 2026 Police Counterfeit Unit and Brand Protectors confiscated counterfeit goods worth R1.2 million between 12–15 January 2026. Operations in Carletonville (R367 420), Roodepoort (R390 655), Vereeniging (R129 030) and Johannesburg (R373 160) targeted shops selling fake consumables, clothing, toys, handbags and cellphone accessories.

▶️ GAUTENG – 17 January 2026 – Two foreign nationals were arrested in Dobsonville after being found manufacturing illicit alcohol. Members of the Johannesburg K9 Unit confiscated machinery, packaged alcohol in 100ml containers, branded labels, and cash believed to be crime proceeds.

▶️Mpumalanga on 13 January 2026 police conducted an operation at a farm in Carolina and recovered thirteen unlicensed firearms which include three homemade firearms, four rifles, one shotgun, five handguns, six pellet guns and 1 997 rounds of ammunition as well as 106 blanks. The suspect was arrested illegal possession of firearms. Investigation continues.

In a separation operation, police intercepted a suspicious white vehicle with Botswana registration number plate travelling towards Breyten, Carolina. Dagga weighing 260 kg to the street value of R1.5 million recovered, and a suspect fled and abandoned a vehicle. Police investigation continues.

▶️ LIMPOPO – 13 January 2026 Multi-disciplinary SAPS teams in Namakgale and Lulekani arrested three male suspects aged 33–41 for armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm during an intelligence-driven operation on 11 January 2026.

▶️ KWAZULU-NATAL –Four suspects were shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police at Woodlands in Montclair, south of Durban on16 January 2026. Seven more suspects were arrested with injuries. Three firearms were recovered and a search is ongoing for at least five suspects who evaded arrest.

Still in KZN, four suspects arrested in connection with cases of murder and attempted committed in Chatsworth, where a 20-year-old man was shot multiple times and died. During, the operation police recovered a firearm with eight rounds of ammunition.

▶️ FREE STATE – 17 January 2026, Swift police action in Meqheleng, Ficksburg led to the arrest of two foreign nationals (aged 26 and 29) within 24 hours of a triple murder committed on 16 January 2026. One suspect was intercepted at a taxi rank while attempting to flee, and the other was found hiding in a house. Both will appear in the Meqheleng Magistrate’s Court soon.
