Seventeen South African men, aged 20-39, have been lured to Russia with promises of lucrative jobs, only to find themselves forced to fight on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war. The men, mostly from KwaZulu-Natal, were allegedly recruited by individuals linked to the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party, who promised them “security training” ¹ ² ³.

However, upon arrival, their phones were seized, and they were made to sign contracts in a language they didn’t understand. They were then transported to the Donbas region, where they’re facing drones, shells, and freezing conditions without proper military experience. One commander reportedly told them to “stop whining to your mothers and pull up your balls” ¹.

The South African government has condemned the exploitation and launched an investigation. President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the State Security Agency and Defence Intelligence to explain how these recruitment operations happened without detection. The Ukrainian ambassador to South Africa has warned that it’s a colonial war and Africans shouldn’t be fighting it ² ⁴.

The incident highlights gaps in South Africa’s national security system and raises questions about foreign influence campaigns. The men are now trapped, and their families are desperate for their safe return
