TRIAL: HIGHLIGHTS | MARIA MAKGATO’S SON BREAKS DOWN IN THE WITNESS BOX

The firstborn son of the late Maria Makgato who was shot and killed at a farm in Sebayeng outside Mankweng broke down into tears in the witness box on Wednesday afternoon.

Theo Makgato told the Polokwane High Court that he was hoping to find his mother at Kaalfontein after she did not return home the night before.

The 23-year-old was testifying in the trial of farm owner, Zachariah Olivier and his employee, William Musora who are accused of shooting and killing his mother and another woman, Lucia Ndlovu, on the 17 August 2024 and throwing their bodies in a pigsty.

“I last saw my mother that Saturday morning before I left home and when I returned in the afternoon, my siblings informed me that our mother had gone to Kaalfontein to collect dairy products from the farm.”

“My mother usually visited the farm with her friend, known as Sylvia, to collect dairy products at the farm, however on that day Sylvia did not leave with my mother because she ( Sylvia ) was running late.

Makgato says when his mother did not return home that Saturday, he decided to call Sylvia on Sunday morning to find out his mother’s whereabouts.

He says Sylvia informed him that she heard gunshots when she was still on her way to the farm to join his mother and she decided to turn back home.
